On the Existence of Bertrand-Nash Equilibrium Prices Under Logit Demand

چکیده
This article proves the existence of equilibrium prices in Bertrand competition with multi-product firms using the Logit model of demand. The most general proof, an application of the PoincareHopf Theorem, does not rely on restrictive assumptions such as singleproduct firms, firm homogeneity or symmetry, homogeneous product costs, or even concavity of the utility function with respect to prices. This proof relies on new conditions for the indirect utility function, along with fixed-point equations derived from the first-order conditions and a direct analysis of the second-order conditions that proves the uniqueness of profit-maximizing prices. The degree to which our conditions are as weak as possible is discussed. Models with finite purchasing power and convex total costs are also addressed. Analysis of equilibrium prices for multi-product firms with constant unit costs suggests that BertrandNash equilibrium cannot adequately describe multi-product pricing in differentiated product markets.

Fixed-Point Approaches to Computing Bertrand-Nash Equilibrium Prices Under Mixed-Logit Demand
This article describes numerical methods that exploit fixed-point equations equivalent to the first-order condition for Bertrand-Nash equilibrium prices in a class of differentiated product market models based on the mixed-logit model of demand. One fixed-point equation is already prevalent in the literature, and one is novel. Equilibrium prices are computed for the calendar year 2005 new-vehic...
متن کاملBertrand-nash Equilibrium in the Retail Duopoly Model under Asymmetric Costs
In this paper, the Bertrand's price competition in the retail duopoly with asymmetric costs is analyzed. Retailers sell substitute products in the framework of the classical economic order quantity (EOQ) model with linear demand function. The market potential and competitor price are considered to be the bifurcation parameters of retailers. Levels of the barriers to market penetration depending...
متن کاملCost Pass-Through in Differentiated Product Markets: The Case of U.S. Processed Cheese
In this paper, we estimate a mixed logit model for demand in the U.S. processed cheese market. The estimates are used to determine pass-through rates of cost changes under different behavioral regimes. We find that, under collusion, the pass-through rates for all brands fall between 21% and 31% while, under Bertrand-Nash price competition, the range of pass-through rates are between 73% and 103...
متن کاملOn the Efficiency of Bertrand and Cournot Equilibria with Product Differentation
In a differentiated products setting with n varieties it is shown, under certain regularity conditions, that if the demand structure is symmetric and Bertrand and Cournot equilibria are unique then prices and profits are larger and quantities smaller in Cournot than in Bertrand competition and, as n grows, both equilibria converge to the efficient outcome at a rate of at least l/n. If Bertrand ...
متن کاملPrice Competition under Multinomial Logit Demand Functions with Random Coefficients
In this paper, we postulate a general class of price competition models with Mixed Multinomial Logit demand functions under affine cost functions. We first characterize the equilibrium behavior of this class of models in the case where each product in the market is sold by a separate, independent firm and customers share a common income level. We identify a simple and very broadly satisfied con...
